Dear Jennifer’s friends and family,

Jennifer touched my life in several ways. She taught my work in her classroom and wrote the reader’s guide for Man o’ War, teaching me about my own story in the process. She uplifted my writing at national conferences and called out discrimination on my behalf.

She even shared her stream of consciousness thoughts on my new book as “breadcrumbs.” This heartfelt poem is one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received as an author.

Even though we never met, Jennifer understood that my stories are communion. She is one of the only readers who has had the courage to share back. I’m going to miss her brilliance, but I promise to continue her incredible work of treating everyone like they can be as brilliant as she was.

In grief, I often ask Gibran why. He answers, “When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.”

Thank you, Jennifer, for your great wisdom, courageous heart, and literary delight. I’m so glad you were here. I’m so thankful you reached me.

Love & healing to all,

Cory McCarthy
